Sundays @ 10a

Unity of Tacoma has a Chaplain Team informational meeting every spring. Congregants wishing to learn more about becoming a chaplain should attend one of these annual meetings. Watch the church calendar and listen for announcements during Sunday Celebrations.

"In Unity we practice affirmative prayer: When we pray with love, gratitude or give praise and thanksgiving, we enter into expanded state of consciousness. True prayer is an inner attitude. The purpose is to change ourselves.  As chaplains, we hold spiritual space and we consciously call on the presence of God. To facilitate this, we take a deep breath and focus our attention to our heart. We lovingly listen without judgment or the need to fix or advise. We shift in consciousness and become one with the person we are praying with; remembering with God all things are possible, regardless of appearances. We pray in accordance with the Will of God in love and we hold all that is shared in the strictest confidence."

-Debora Burks, Prayer Chaplain Trainer

In support of the mission and vision of Unity of Tacoma, we are committed to reaching out in prayer, comfort and support to our congregation. As our church and ministry continue to grow, our Prayer Chaplains serve to meet the needs of our extended community. Completing the Prayer Chaplain training and being a Prayer Chaplain is transformational soul work. As you discover your greatness and the greatness of others, we are here to support you as you make this next step on your spiritual journey. We invite you to prayerfully consider becoming a Prayer Chaplain. It is a unique service that differs from many of the other volunteer opportunities in terms of commitment–level and responsibilities. The following information is provided as a basic introduction to the concept and how it works.

What is a Prayer Chaplain?
A Prayer Chaplain is:

  • Someone who will create and hold a spiritual space with you.
  • Someone who will lovingly listen to you
  • Someone who will pray with you.
  • Someone who holds what is shared in the strictest confidence.

What is the time commitment?

The Prayer Chaplain Team is a service opportunity for any congregant who is truly looking to take the next step in the development of spiritual maturity, discipline, and commitment.  As such, Prayer Chaplains make a one-year commitment in fulfilling their responsibilities.

These responsibilities include:
Serving at 2-3 church services monthly
About 1 hour or less of wellness calling per month
One 2-hour Prayer Chaplain Meeting per month
Yearly off- and on-site intensive training

What if I’ve never done anything like this before?
No prior experience in prayer or praying with others is required to serve as a Prayer Chaplain. You must be an active church/ministry member who has completed Membership Classes. Be willing to deepen your spiritual path through prayer and service by making this commitment to our Prayer Chaplain Program.

How does a Prayer Chaplain differ from a Chaplain in a hospital or care facility?
Unlike hospital chaplains, Prayer Chaplains are not ordained and are not trained as counselors. Prayer Chaplains are trained to do three things only: hold spiritual space, listen, and pray. Prayer Chaplains are not trained to go out and “minister” to the community-at-large but are trained as a lay resource to help meet the pastoral care needs within our church community.
