Meet Our Prayer Chaplains
Unity of Tacoma's Prayer Chaplains are available to pray with you most Sundays before and after the 10:00 A.M. Sunday service. Chaplains wearing a purple stole are available for prayer. If no chaplain is in service, please ask the minister for prayer.
"I am thankful for each day and the opportunity to express God's love through words of encouragement and small acts of kindness. I am a Prayer Chaplain because prayer has been an integral part of my life since childhood. I know the power of prayer. I'm called to service through prayer, knowing God is greater than any circumstance. I am committed to supporting our ministers and my spiritual family at Unity of Tacoma through prayer. I consider it an honor and a privilege to pray with others."
Deb has been in Unity for 36 years. She began attending a Unity church in 1982 and became a member in 1985. She's been a member at a Unity church ever since. Over her many years in Unity Deb has served as a board member, youth director, teacher, platform assistant, small group leader and speaker. Deb came to Unity of Tacoma in 2003 and became a member in 2005 and joined the chaplain team. In addition to serving as a chaplain, Deb has been secretary to the board of trustees, a small group facilitator, the mission and vision chair, and has served on the drama, sound, and real estate teams.
Deb is an active volunteer in the greater community outside Unity of Tacoma. She is the newsletter editor for Spanaway-Parkland Lions Club and former Chair of Eyeglasses and Hearing aides committee. She has served as a Senior Companion Station Supervisor up until her cancer diagnosis. She has always helped others in her career, and volunteering allows her to continue to serve. She shares her story, resources, insight and encouragement with other people living with cancer and with those who are interested in a healthy lifestyle.
Her sons, Eric and Rufus are her motivation, pride, and joy.
Janet Rhodes, LUT
“I am a chaplain because prayer is central to who I am; it is part of my being. I feel privileged to support the members of the church family in prayer. I feel responsible as someone who has been healed spiritually and emotionally through the teachings of Unity and through prayer to provide that prayer support to others in the church community. And I love to pray.”
Janet Rhodes has been with Unity since 1977, when she joined Unity of Olympia and started taking classes. By 1979 she was teaching classes and studying to become a Licensed Unity Teacher. In 1983, she received her LUT License and joined the Unity of Olympia prayer team. Janet has been at Unity of Tacoma since about 2013 and a chaplain since 2014. When Janet isn’t at Unity of Tacoma, she is writing science fiction (she is published), painting (in pastels, acrylics, or other media), reading, or playing music with my recorders or ukulele. Otherwise, she is “just sitting still meditating somewhere”.
"I have been involved at Unity of Tacoma since 1986. During that time I have given of my time and talent as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, platform assistant and trustee. When not at unity, I spend time with my grandchildren. I enjoy singing, video games, cooking vegetarian meals and reading light mysteries. I became a prayer chaplain because I have learned so much about aggirmative prayer and how it was useful in my life and how prayer works. I also love the support of the prayer chaplain team. I am truly grateful."
"I have served as a chaplain and musician at Unity of Tacoma. When I am not at Unity of Tacoma I like to play music, write my book, practice trumpet and share with my friend, love and honey lamb. I am a chaplain to serve restoration of my brothers and sisters to the experience of feeling whole, balanced, joyful. Connection with all who invite guidance, by universally focused, loving prayer, is somethign I'm passionate about. Doing anythign to facilitate divine consciousness is clearly sacred to my heart."
